The Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Russia is interested in overcoming the crisis in the OPCW

02 April 2019

. Moscow is interested in overcoming the crisis in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which is almost split. This was announced by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a meeting with the Director General of the OPCW Technical Secretary Fernando Arias Gonzalez.

«The situation in the OPCW is not satisfactory. The organization is practically split due to attempts to constantly politicise various aspects of its activities», he noted, in particular.

According to Lavrov, only by pooling the efforts of all countries that are aware of the depth of the problems, it is possible to «improve the situation in the OPCW and return this organization, its work, to a normal consensus channel without any politicisation».

Let’s remind that at the end of June last year, the OPCW member states voted on a British proposal to expand the organization’s mandate, allowing  it to independently identify those responsible for the chemical attack.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described as «unhealthy» the provision of the OPCW technical secretariat with additional functions of identifying those responsible for the chemical attack.
