The next meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee may take place in summer

07 July 2021

The next meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee may take place in the summer of 2021, Alexander Lavrentyev, Russian President's Special Representative for Syria, told TASS on Wednesday.

"Most likely, this [meeting of the Constitutional Committee] will take place in the summer," he said.

"We called on UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen to work in this direction. All the delegations - both ours and Iran's - expressed to him their support to continue this work, their interest in it. He assured us that he will continue the work," Lavrentyev added.

According to Lavrentyev, the West has not yet provided Russia with evidence in favor of extending the mechanism of cross-border assistance to Syria.

He said the topic was discussed at a meeting of the Russian delegation with UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in Nur-Sultan. "We see no clear evidence in favor of extending this cross-border mechanism. All we see is wailing about the suffering of the Syrian people," Lavrentyev told reporters.

According to the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation, the "collective West" has not yet come up with any specific proposals as to how to really ease the suffering of Syrians.

An international meeting on Syria is being held on July 7 and 8 with delegations of guarantor countries (Iran, Russia and Turkey), the Syrian government and the Syrian armed opposition. Representatives of the UN, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are attending as observers. The talks focus on the situation in Syria, international humanitarian assistance to the country, prospects for the resumption of the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, as well as confidence-building measures, including the exchange of prisoners, the release of hostages and the search for missing persons.
