The ruling party of Tajikistan announced the nomination of Emomali Rahmon for the post of President

The People's Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) held an extraordinary congress on Thursday to nominate the current President Emomali Rahmon for the upcoming October 11 presidential election, Deputies of the Congress voted unanimously in favor of this proposal, head of the Central Executive Committee of the PDPT Abdurakhmon Khonzoda told TASS.


"Today, an extraordinary  congress of the PDPT was held in Dushanbe, where delegates unanimously nominated Emomali Rahmon as a candidate for President of Tajikistan," Khonzoda said. According to him, the congress was attended by about 1 thousand delegates from all regions of the country.


Khonzoda noted that the congress was held with the participation of party activists, representatives of the faction of the PDPT in Parliament, the CEC, as well as youth public organization "Sozandagonu Vatan ("Creators of homeland"). According to the agenda of the congress, the issues of nominating a candidate from the party for the upcoming presidential elections, the party's election program and organizational issues were considered. The first Deputy Chairman of the party, Abdujabbor Azizi, spoke about the candidate's election program, noting that Rahmon has accumulated a huge political and managerial experience for its implementation, as well as a large human resource potential of like-minded people.


The current head of state was also nominated earlier by the Federation of independent trade unions of Tajikistan and the Youth Union of Tajikistan.


About the party and the leader


The PDPT is the country's largest political party, formed in 1994. It has more than 494,000 members, of which 48% are women and 37% are young people. The leader of the party since 1998 is the head of state Emomali Rahmon. As the party's candidate, he participated in the 1999 presidential election, receiving 97.6% of the vote then, then in 2006, gaining 79.3% of the vote. The most recent presidential election in Tajikistan was held on November 6, 2013. Rahmon was elected President for the fourth time, gaining the support of 83.9% (more than 3 million) of voters with a turnout of more than 86.6%.


Emomali Rahmon was born in 1952, in Dangar, Kulyab region-now Khatlon region of Tajikistan. After graduating from high school and receiving secondary special education, he served in the Pacific fleet in Primorsky Krai. After returning from the service, he graduated from the faculty of Economics of the Tajik National University (formerly the Tajik State University named after Lenin-ed. TASS). He has held the post of head of state since 1992, and has held the lifetime title of the Leader of the Nation since 2015.


About the upcoming elections


On August 6, the upper and lower houses of the Parliament of Tajikistan held the second joint session of the sixth convocation, at which the date of the presidential election was set for October 11, 2020. Currently, five candidates have been nominated for the upcoming elections - from the PDPT, as well as the leaders of the Agrarian (Rustam Latifzoda), Socialist (Abdukhalim Gafforov), Democratic (Saijafar Usmonzoda) parties and the Party of economic development of Tajikistan (Rustam Rahmatzoda).
