The Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN spoke out against US attempts to accuse Iran of destabilizing the region

First Deputy permanent representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky reminded the US that the actions of another country, not Iran, led to the destabilization of the situation in Iraq.

At a meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday, US Ambassador Kelly Craft said that helping Iraq prosper should include "getting rid of the negative influence of Iran, which is the world's leading sponsor of terrorism."

"We noted that our American colleagues again tried to accuse Iran of destabilizing the situation in Iraq, referring to their failed attempt to impose an arms embargo on Iran this month," Polyansky said in his speech.

"It seems that they do not have enough reasons to talk about the situation in the region and that they are eager to use every opportunity to raise this topic," the diplomat continued. "This seems very strange, especially in light of the fact that the US recently rejected two Russian initiatives to hold a special meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation around the nuclear deal with Iran."

"In any case, we all know the real reasons for the upheavals that are engulfing this country," he stated. - I'm just going to quote the President [of the USA Donald] Trump, who called the war in Iraq "the worst geopolitical mistake of our generation."

The United States launched the invasion in March 2003, justifying it by the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Saddam Hussein's possession, which was never confirmed later, and by Iraq's assistance to terrorist groups, in particular, al-Qaeda (banned in the Russian Federation), which organized the attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001.
