Saeb Erekat, the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), a member of the Fatah Central Committee and chief negotiator with Israel, died on Tuesday at the age of 66 as a result of complications after infection with the new coronavirus. This was reported by the official representative of the Fatah movement Osama al-Kawasmi, the news portal Donia Al-Watan reports.
Erekat reported his infestation with the coronavirus on October 9 on Twitter. All this time he was being treated at home in Jericho in the West Bank, while he was in self-isolation. He got worse on October 18, a well-known politician was transferred to the Israeli clinic "Hadassah" in Jerusalem. Doctors assessed his condition as extremely serious.
In 2017, Erekat had lung transplant surgery in the US, and he was in the high-risk group.
For more than two decades, Erekat was the chief Palestinian negotiator with Israel and was known for his special relationship with former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who died 16 years ago - November 11, 2004.
