07 April 2020

Representatives of the radical Taliban movement (outlawed in Russia) refused to continue negotiations with the government on the exchange of prisoners, the representative of the movement's political office in Qatar Suheil Shaheen said.

"We sent a technical team of the Commission on prisoners' Affairs to Kabul to check and identify our prisoners because the release of prisoners was to start in accordance with the signed agreement and the promise made (to us). Unfortunately, however, their release is still delayed under one pretext or another. Therefore, our technical team will not participate in useless meetings with the parties involved, starting tomorrow, " Shaheen wrote in particular on Twitter.

The exchange of prisoners is one of the points of the first peace agreement in more than 18 years of war, which the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban signed on February 29. The document also provides for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the beginning of an inter-Afghan dialogue after the prisoner exchange deal.
