The UN General Assembly blocked the Russian resolution on the rejection of sanctions

03 April 2020

The UN General Assembly blocked a draft resolution developed by Russia calling for the rejection of trade wars and the lifting of unilateral sanctions that hinder the fight against coronavirus. The document was opposed by the United States, the European Union, Great Britain, Ukraine and Georgia.

"We regret that a small group of states apologists for sanctions policy was not ready to respond to the call of the UN Secretary-General and could not compromise their politicized approaches and interests," the Russian permanent mission to the UN said.

The UN General Assembly, as noted, adopted an alternative draft resolution with a vague call for "solidarity of countries in the fight against the pandemic", which does not involve the rejection of sanctions.
