The UN Security Council is preparing a resolution on the US-Taliban agreement

10 March 2020

Today, the UN Security Council will vote on a resolution supporting the signing of a peace agreement between the US and the Afghan radical Taliban movement.

The event is expected at 16: 00 (23:00 Moscow time), RIA Novosti reports.

The text of the resolution, in particular, states that the UN Security Council "welcomes significant steps towards ending the war" and calls on the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban (outlawed in Russia) "as a sign of good will to implement additional confidence-building measures to create conditions conducive to the rapid start and success of intra-Afghan negotiations and the establishment of a lasting peace".

The US and the Taliban signed the first peace agreement in more than 18 years of war on February 29 in Qatar. The document assumes the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the beginning of the inter-Afghan dialogue in March after the deal on the exchange of prisoners.
