The Widow of a Russian Died in Hamas Captivity Refuses to Meet with Netanyahu

03 September

The widow of Alexander Lobanov, a Russian national who died while in captivity in Gaza, refused to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visited Lobanov’s parents. This information was reported by the state broadcaster Kan.

According to the report, the prime minister visited the Lobanovs' home in Ashkelon, located in southern Israel, on September 3 to personally extend his condolences. The parents of the deceased, Oksana and Grigory Lobanov, did meet with Netanyahu during his visit.

Earlier, on September 1, Netanyahu had called Oksana and Grigory to apologize for the state's failure to protect their son and for being unable to bring him back alive from Gaza. On the same day, the Israeli military announced that they had recovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages in the southern Palestinian enclave. Among them was Alexander Lobanov, who held dual Russian and Israeli citizenship. In response, Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov offered his condolences to the Lobanov family and the other victims' families. He also emphasized that Russian diplomats are continuing their efforts to secure the release of Alexander Trufanov, another Russian national still held captive in the Gaza Strip.
