The former presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya appealed to European leaders not to recognize the results of the presidential elections held in the country on August 9.

"I urge you not to recognize the results of rigged elections," she said in a video message posted on YouTube. The address was in English.

"In order to facilitate the peaceful transfer of power in my country, I initiated the creation of the National coordinating council of Belarus, which will lead the process of peaceful transfer of power through dialogue," she added.

According to Tikhanovskaya, "the Council will immediately initiate new fair and democratic presidential elections under international supervision." She also called on European leaders to "respect the principles of international law, the sovereignty of Belarus and the choice of the Belarusian people."

Currently, Tikhanovskaya is in Lithuania. Her appeal was published on the eve of an emergency EU summit on the situation in Belarus scheduled for Wednesday, which will be held in the format of a video conference.

The National coordinating council was formed on Tuesday. Its main membership includes 70 opposition figures. The purpose of the Council is to promote the peaceful transfer of power in the Republic. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko called the creation of the coordinating Council of the opposition an attempt to seize power.
