As the United States announced that Hamas rejected Egypt's proposal for a short-term ceasefire in Gaza, negotiations are ongoing, and mediators are persisting in their efforts to broker an agreement, according to a diplomatic source familiar with the situation, who spoke to The Times of Israel.
The source revealed that “all options are on the table to try to reach a deal, and the parties are closely monitoring the US election outcomes to decide on their response.” The current Egyptian proposal includes a 12-day ceasefire during which Hamas would release four Israeli hostages, followed by talks aimed at establishing a permanent ceasefire. However, Hamas has made it clear that they will only agree to a short-term arrangement if it includes future guarantees, which the Egyptian proposal does not offer.
Earlier reports by Saudi news channel Al Arabiya indicated that Hamas leadership might accept the Egyptian offer if Israel commits to treating it as part of a potential comprehensive agreement.
Hamas sources also told Asharq News, another Saudi outlet, that the organization prefers to secure a broad settlement with Israel, rather than fragmented agreements.
