Early presidential elections in Kazakhstan will be held in autumn 2022, and parliamentary elections - in the first half of 2023. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said this on Thursday in an address to the nation.
"I suggest holding an extraordinary presidential election this fall," he said. The head of state also suggested organizing early elections to the Majilis (lower house) of parliament and maslikhats (local representative bodies) in the first half of next year.
In addition, Tokayev believes it is necessary to reduce the presidential term to one, it will be increased from five to seven years. The head of the republic noted that in the middle of 2023 in Kazakhstan there will be a political reset of all state bodies. "For me, the interests of the state are above all, so I am ready to go to early presidential elections, even despite the reduction of my own term," he explained.
On March 19, 2019, Kazakhstan's first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, resigned as head of state. The next day, the former head of the Senate (upper house of parliament) of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took the oath of office and assumed the office of president of the country. Extraordinary presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on June 9, 2019, in which Tokayev won with 70.96% of the vote. Presidential elections in the republic were held every five years.
According to the results of January 10, 2021 elections to the Majilis (lower house) the ruling party "Nur Otan" (later renamed into "Amanat") received 71.09% of votes, the People's Party of Kazakhstan gained 9.10% and "Ak Zhol" ("Bright Path") 10.95%. The turnout at the elections was 63.25%. The next parliamentary elections were to be held in 2025.
