26 December 2022

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that the role of the Russian language in strengthening the linguistic space of the CIS cannot be questioned in any way.

"Of course, the cultural and humanitarian cooperation, and, as correctly noted, the strengthening of the linguistic space in the CIS is of enduring importance. Here the role of the Russian language, naturally, cannot be questioned in any way," Tokayev said at the CIS informal summit on Monday.

The Kazakh president noted that "granting St. Petersburg the official status of cultural capital of the Commonwealth in 2023 will serve the strengthening of cultural ties between the CIS countries." Tokayev also reminded that 2023 will be the year of the Russian language in the Commonwealth and that Kazakhstan's initiative to establish an international organization under the aegis of the CIS to support the Russian language will be practically developed.
