During a meeting in Geneva, Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Murat Nurtleu extended an invitation from President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, to participate in the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit scheduled for July.
"During the meeting, the parties discussed various global challenges and the deepening cooperation among Central Asian countries. Additionally, they addressed Kazakhstan's initiative to establish the UN Regional Center for Sustainable Development for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty," the press service of Kazakhstan's FM reported.
Expressing appreciation for the invitation, Guterres highly commended Kazakhstan's steadfast efforts in promoting sustainable development and enhancing international peace and security. He specifically commended Kazakhstan's proactive role within regional organizations such as the SCO and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.
Kazakhstan is set to chair the SCO in 2023-2024. Established in 2001, the SCO initially comprised six member states, later expanding to include India, Pakistan, and Iran. Belarus is expected to complete the process of joining the SCO soon.
