President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of the Republic of Kazakhstan emphasized the country's commitment to the principle of indivisible Eurasian security during a meeting in Astana with Secretaries of the Security Councils of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
"We uphold the principle of indivisible Eurasian security, emphasizing mutual understanding and the establishment of confidence-building measures. This approach should serve as the cornerstone for the strategic goal of forming a security belt around the SCO perimeter. Kazakhstan, under its chairmanship of the organization, prioritizes contributing to global peace and the harmonious coexistence of nations. Hence, we proposed the joint development and adoption of the SCO initiative 'On World Unity for Just Peace and Harmony.' Kazakhstan is prepared to demonstrate flexibility in discussing this significant document," President Tokayev stated, as quoted by his press service.
Tokayev highlighted the initial purpose behind the formation of the SCO, which was to ensure stability and security in the region to collectively combat the "three forces of evil." He emphasized the evolving nature of these threats, urging for more systematic and decisive responses. Countering terrorism, extremism, and separatism, along with addressing transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, and cybersecurity challenges, are among Kazakhstan's priorities during its chairmanship in the SCO.
Addressing the situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East, Tokayev stressed the importance of preventing international terrorist groups from exploiting Afghan territory. He also underscored the need to avert a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and foster conditions for long-term stabilization. Regarding the Middle East conflict, Tokayev highlighted the imperative of high-level diplomacy to prevent further escalation and mitigate its tragic consequences on regional stability.
As Astana hosts the April 2-3 meeting of SCO Council Secretaries, Kazakhstan, chairing the organization from 2023 to 2024, is gearing up for the upcoming summit scheduled for July 3-4 in Astana. Tokayev expressed confidence in the organization's ability, representing half of the world's population, to propose a formula for a secure and just peace.
"In combating international terrorism, political will, collective action, and, above all, effective measures are imperative. Rest assured, Kazakhstan is fully committed to this noble endeavor. I eagerly anticipate the forthcoming summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Astana," concluded Tokayev.
