Tokayev reappoints Smailov as Prime Minister of Kazakhstan

On Thursday, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reappointed Alikhan Smailov as Prime Minister of the Republic. This was reported by the press service of the head of state.


"To appoint Alikhan Askhanovich Smailov as Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan," the presidential decree reads. Smailov has been heading the government of the republic since January 2022.


Earlier, deputies of the Majilis (lower house of parliament) at a session by a majority vote gave their consent to the president to approve Smailov's candidacy for the post of prime minister.


On Wednesday, the head of state signed a decree instructing the government to perform the duties until a new cabinet is approved. Previously, the president, after consulting with the factions of political parties in the Majilis, had submitted a candidate for the post of the head of the cabinet for the consent of the chamber.

 

Alikhan Smailov, 50, has served as first deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan since May 2020. Since February 2019, he worked as first deputy head of the government - the minister of finance, in different years he was the minister of finance and the assistant to the president.
