The United Nations remains the only universal global organization, but its Security Council needs to be reformed. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said this at the plenary session of the Astana International Forum.
"We are witnessing the undermining of the world order foundations, which has been built since the creation of the United Nations. The UN remains the only universal global organization that unites us all. However, we will not be able to meet the challenges without comprehensive reform of its Security Council," Tokayev said.
He said it is necessary "for the 'middle powers' voices in the Council to sound more loudly and to be heard."
"Recent new crises - from COVID-19 to armed conflicts - threaten the fragile international ecosystem. But the causes of this instability are rooted deep in our past. We are also witnessing the return, after 30 years, of the old block mentality that divided us," the Kazakh president explained.
He noted that the forces of division are not exclusively geopolitical. "They also have an economic background. Economic policy itself is openly used as a weapon. This confrontation includes sanctions and trade wars, targeted debt policies, restricted access or isolation from financing sources, and control over investment. Taken together, these factors are gradually undermining the foundations on which global peace and prosperity of recent decades are based: free trade, global investment, innovation and fair competition," Tokayev stressed.
