Tourist flow from Russia to the Maldives in 2022 decreased by 8.4% compared to the previous year - down to 202 thousand visits, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) said in a report referring to the immigration authorities of the Maldives.
"From January to December 2022 inclusive the country counted 201 952 visits of citizens of the Russian Federation. Recall that a record for the Russian tourist flow to the islands was set in 2021 counting 220,424 visits of Russians. Accordingly, tourist flow from Russia to this country in 2022 decreased by 8.4% compared to the previous year", the report says.
The decrease of tourist flow is mainly caused by decrease of trips in spring due to complications in air communication caused by the western sanctions. High competition with Thailand also influenced the situation. Nevertheless, the Russian tourist flow to the Maldives in 2022 was 2.4 times higher than in 2019, and this destination has become a popular category in the Russian tourist market, ATOR noted.
Experts predict that in 2023, the Maldives will remain a highly sought-after destination among Russians. Choice of foreign destinations for "luxury" vacation in 2023 is likely to be about as limited as in the past, the association added.
