The US President Donald Trump signed a document recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The signing ceremony was held at the White House with the participation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who thanked the American leadership «for their understanding in recognizing this disputed territory».
We recall, against the intention of Trump to actually give part of Syria to Israel, most countries of the world, including Russia, spoke out.
The Kremlin, in particular, declared that this decision could significantly aggravate the situation in the region.
We recall that until 1967 the Golan Heights were part of Syria. Most of the territory of the Golan was captured by Israel during the six-day war in 1967. In 1981, the Knesset unilaterallly proclaimed Israel’s sovereignty over this territory. The UN Security Council didn’t recognize this decision.
