Turkey has pledged to deliver drones to Egypt as part of efforts to restore and strengthen bilateral relations, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told A-haber TV in an interview.
"Bilateral ties are crucial for several reasons, particularly in ensuring regional stability and fostering trade links," - Fidan stressed. - "Normalizing relations allows Egypt to access support and technology. As part of our agreement, Turkey commits to supplying drones and advanced technologies. Our collaboration in Africa, particularly in Libya, remains a key priority."
Anticipating a potential visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Egypt in mid-February, this would mark the first official engagement by a Turkish leader with Egypt since the ousting of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
The relationship between Ankara and Cairo deteriorated in 2013 post-Morsi's removal, leading to the recall of ambassadors. However, diplomatic bridges began to mend in March 2021 when then-Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu initiated contact with Egypt at the diplomatic level. A brief meeting between the presidents of Egypt and Turkey at the World Cup opening in Qatar in November 2022 marked a noticeable thaw in their relations. Later that month, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry paid a visit to Adana, a city recovering from an earthquake in southern Turkey.
On July 4, 2023, the two nations officially reestablished full diplomatic relations by appointing ambassadors to each other's capitals.
