Turkey calls to West to join efforts to launch peace talks on Ukraine

26 April 2023

Turkey has called on the West to unite efforts in order to start truce negotiations in Ukraine, Turkish President's spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Wednesday.

"Let us mobilize all our means and capabilities to end <...> [the conflict] in Ukraine. The continuation, development and deepening <...> [of this conflict] will only lead to a global catastrophe. To prevent it, let us unite all our forces for peace and negotiation. Let us try to bring the parties together with a perspective oriented toward peace, not war," he said.

The Star newspaper noted that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman "addressed the world, especially the Western countries" with these words.

In addition, Kalin expressed the opinion that the conflict in Ukraine will end exclusively through the conclusion of "a new grand agreement between Russia and the West." In his view, the conflict is "a reflection of searching for a new balance between Russia and the West." "Instead of continuing the war, let's work on peace negotiations for three years, five years. Let's stop the conflict, freeze it. Let's focus on how we can create a basis for negotiations in its current state," said Erdogan's spokesman.

Ankara has previously repeatedly offered to mediate in talks between Russia and Ukraine. Consultations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have also taken place in Turkey.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov earlier told reporters that Russia had always been ready to solve problems through negotiations. At the same time, he noted that Ukrainian laws prohibit that country's president, Vladimir Zelensky, from starting dialogue with the Kremlin, and Western states "are not inclined to allow Kiev any flexibility in this matter." In this connection, he said, "there is no need to say that there are any prospects [for negotiations with Ukraine]."
