Turkey held memorial events to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Andrei Karlov

Memorial events commemorating the anniversary of the death of Russian Hero Andrei Karlov were held in Turkey on Friday.


Ceremonies commemorating the Russian ambassador to Turkey who died in a terrorist attack four years ago were held at the Russian embassy in Ankara. Employees of Russian diplomatic missions laid flowers at the monument to Karlov at the embassy in the afternoon. Ambassadors from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, among others, took part in the ceremony.


"We remember and love Andrei Gennadyevich. This year we held a ceremony in memory of him taking into account sanitary and epidemiological measures," Russian Ambassador to Turkey Alexei Yerkhov told Russian journalists.


Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was killed on December 19, 2016, during a speech at the opening of a photo exhibition in Ankara, the attacker, police officer Mevlut Mert Altintas, was liquidated. The Russian Foreign Ministry qualified the incident as an act of terrorism, and the Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under the article "Act of International Terrorism". Posthumously Karlov was awarded the title of Hero of Russia.

 

Hearings on the murder of Andrei Karlov continue in the second court of Ankara for especially grave crimes.
