Turkey on alert against naval mines floating in Black Sea

06 April 2022

Another floating mine was discovered in the Black Sea off Kefken Island near Turkey's coast on Wednesday, the country's defense ministry reported.

"The area has been secured and the submarine defense units of the naval command are dealing with the mine," the ministry said in a statement on its website.

This is the third time floating mines have been found off Turkey's coast. In late March, two were found near the Bosphorus Strait and the maritime border with Bulgaria. At the same time, the Turkish defense ministry announced that it was placing minesweepers and patrol aircraft on high alert.

On March 19, the FSB Public Relations Center (PRC) reported that mines planted by the Ukrainian Navy on approaches to ports in the Black Sea could drift toward the Bosporus due to broken cables.
