Turkey Relies on Meeting Russia's Requirements to Restart Grain Deal

04 September 2023

Turkey anticipates that Russia will reconsider the grain deal agreement, taking into account the fulfillment of its stipulated requirements, according to a source in Ankara.

"Russia has clarified that it will not rejoin the grain deal until its demands are met. Turkey is engaged in ongoing negotiations to address these issues, including discussions with the UN. The global community is watching the grain export situation closely, and we anticipate that agreements regarding the resumption of the grain corridor will be reached in Sochi," emphasized the source.

Meanwhile, the source highlighted that Ankara had rejected the alternative proposals put forward by Ukraine, deeming them unsafe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are scheduled to hold talks in Sochi on September 4. Despite their regular communication, this meeting will mark the first in-person contact between the two leaders since Russia's withdrawal from the grain deal on July 17.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin emphasized in an interview with TASS that Russia's conditions remain unchanged: the reconnection of Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT, the resumption of spare parts deliveries, the establishment of transportation logistics and insurance, and the restoration of Russian companies' access to their foreign assets. Only after these conditions are met will the possibility of reviving the Black Sea initiative be considered, in line with the initially stated humanitarian objectives.
