Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Monday that Ankara is ready to do whatever is necessary to reduce tensions in Kosovo.
"[I] talked to my colleagues from Serbia and Kosovo about the recent tensions. Peace and stability in the Balkans has always been a priority for Turkey. A new conflict will not help anyone, so Turkey is ready to do whatever is necessary to reduce tensions," the minister wrote on Twitter.
On Sunday evening, the situation in Kosovo and Metohija sharply escalated after the police of the unrecognized entity closed the checkpoint at the administrative line with Serbia. In response, Serbs from northern Kosovo took to the streets and blocked the main highways. Sirens sounded in a number of towns in the north. NATO-led International Security Force (KFOR) police and troops were brought to the Ibar River bridge between north and south Mitrovica.
The international efforts resulted in Pristina's decision to postpone the procedure for issuing the ban on the Serbian documents until 1 September.
