The West, which set a Ukrainian "trap" for Russia, has now set another one, a Greek "trap" for Turkey, retired intelligence colonel Coskun Basbug, a Turkish expert on terrorism and security, told RIA Novosti.
Relations between Greece and Turkey have seriously aggravated in recent years due to territorial disputes. The two countries cannot agree on maritime zones. In late May, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was refusing to have a dialogue with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, referring to his remarks about Ankara during the head of government's trip to the US. The other day, the Turkish leader demanded that Greece demilitarize islands in the Aegean Sea and questioned the stated goals of deploying US bases in Greece.
"Today we are witnessing Turkey becoming for the collective West a country with which, on the one hand, it is necessary to act cautiously and, on the other hand, to wear it out with sanctions as much as possible. If previously there was a Ukrainian "trap" for Russia, now there is another one - a Greek "trap", but for Turkey," believes the interlocutor of the agency.
According to the expert, the goal is to block the implementation of the Turkish ideology.
"The tricky game of the United States in Ukraine was aimed at trapping Russia. In the end, it was Ukraine itself that suffered the most. It should be understood that in such political games there is always one winner - the creator or author, and in this case it is the United States. Now the Americans are playing a similar game against Turkey and are using Greece for this purpose. Using the method of provocation, Washington is trying to pit Ankara and Athens against each other. The main goal is another war, in which the US will once again act as champions of justice. The most unfortunate thing is that Turkey, knowing these plans, has to act cautiously. With all the opportunities it has, Ankara is not starting a war. The Turkish leadership is waiting for sensible politicians to enter the Greek political arena," Basbug noted.
