Turkey to Supply Drones to Egypt Amid Strengthening Bilateral Ties

02 September

An agreement on the supply of Turkish drones to Egypt is expected to be signed during the upcoming visit of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Ankara on September 4, according to a report by Milliyet newspaper.

During el-Sisi's first official visit to Turkey, a high-level strategic cooperation council meeting will be held between the two nations. The talks will focus on increasing bilateral trade, with a goal of raising the annual trade turnover from $10 billion to $15 billion. A central topic of discussion between el-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The leaders will also address the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, the conflict in Libya, and other regional issues, Milliyet reports.

This visit marks a significant step in the normalization of relations between the two countries. Erdogan made his first visit to Egypt in 12 years in February 2024, signaling a thaw in relations that had been strained since the ousting of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Following that event, both nations recalled their ambassadors, with Turkey expressing strong disapproval. Diplomatic contacts resumed in March 2021, and by July 2023, Turkey and Egypt had fully restored diplomatic relations, appointing ambassadors in Ankara and Cairo.
