Turkey Warns of International System Collapse if UN Security Council Fails to Recognize Palestine

27 May

Turkey advocates for the prompt recognition of Palestine as an independent state by the UN Security Council. The country's Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, cautioned that the failure to recognize Palestine could lead to the collapse of the international system.

"Turkey believes it is crucial for the UN Security Council to immediately recognize Palestine as an independent state. This is a requirement of international law and the conscience of humanity. The international system is already in a state of crisis. If a state recognized by 150 countries is once again rejected due to a single country's veto in the UNSC, we will face a reality that will deepen this crisis and potentially lead to the complete collapse of the international system," Fidan stated to reporters after his visit to Brussels. During his visit, he participated in talks organized by the Contact Group of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League and held several bilateral meetings on Sunday.

According to the Turkish foreign minister, even if the UN Security Council does not recognize Palestine, it should still be treated as a sovereign state, following Ankara's example. "We urge the 150 countries that have recognized Palestine to treat it as a real state, as Turkey does—from opening an embassy to following protocol procedures, providing economic assistance, and developing economic relations," he said.

"Palestine is under occupation and cannot enjoy its economic and political freedom. Even symbolically, we must treat Palestine as a real state and protect it," Fidan emphasized.
