Turkey's Armed Forces Strike 27 Kurdish Targets in Northern Iraq

20 March

The Turkish Defense Ministry has announced airstrikes in Northern Iraq targeting facilities belonging to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK,  deemed terrorist by Ankara).

"PKK terrorist organization facilities were identified in the Northern Iraqi regions of Metina, Zap, Hakurk, Gara, and Qandil. Air strikes  destroyed 27 targets, including bunkers, shelters, and caves," stated the ministry via its official page on X on Tuesday.

Earlier, the Defense Ministry had reported the death of a Turkish Armed Forces medical lieutenant in the operational region against the PKK in Iraq.

Turkey is actively deliberating the prospect of launching a new cross-border military operation in Iraq and Syria against Kurdish organizations operating there. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has asserted that Ankara will assume full control of the border with Iraq by summer and address unresolved matters in Syria. The Turkish leadership is reportedly planning to establish a safe zone in Iraq extending up to 40 kilometers from the border.
