Turkey’s Consulate General in Aleppo has resumed operations after a hiatus of nearly 13 years. As shown live on TRT, the Turkish national flag was raised above the diplomatic mission building.
The consulate will gradually increase its staff and begin offering services to the local population. During the ceremony, Burhan Keroglu, Turkey's Acting Charge d'Affaires in Damascus, stated that after the departure of the Ba'ath Party from power, Ankara has “established relations with the true rulers of Syria, which will help contribute to the country's development.”
“We will do everything possible to ensure that our Syrian brothers, whom we have hosted for many years, can return to their homeland safely. Relations between Turkey and Syria will evolve, and we will support efforts to open Syria to the world,” Keroğlu said.
On December 14, Turkey also resumed operations at its embassy in Damascus. The Turkish embassy in Syria had been closed since March 2012, when relations between the two countries soured due to serious political disagreements over how to resolve the Syrian civil conflict. The consulate in Aleppo ceased operations in July 2012.
