Turkey's Motherland Party launches campaign to leave NATO

19 January 2023

On Thursday, Turkey's Motherland Party announced the launch of a nationwide "Let's Leave NATO" campaign calling on the republic's authorities to leave the North Atlantic Alliance.

As part of the campaign, the political movement said, it plans to set up tables in city squares to sign relevant petitions and will hold rallies and protests against NATO bases in Turkey.

Party leader Dogu Perincek said that "a strong NATO means a strong threat to Turkey." "Because NATO and the US are hostile to Turkey. Let's leave NATO," he added. Perincek also published a map of Turkey showing the locations of NATO and US bases in and around Turkey.

The Motherland Party has traditionally held anti-American positions. Previously, the party has repeatedly called on the Turkish authorities to close US military bases on its territory, withdraw their request to buy US F-16 fighter jets and leave NATO.
