Turkish Foreign Minister Plans to Discuss Grain Deal with Lavrov

18 August 2023

Turkish authorities are currently engaged in discussions regarding three potential scenarios regarding the suspended grain deal, which halted implementation on July 17. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan plans to engage in discussions on the matter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba. Following these discussions, a meeting between Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin might occur, as reported by the pro-government newspaper Yeni Şafak.

The first scenario envisions an impasse with no resolution, resulting in an escalation of the ongoing "food crisis." This outcome would not be in the interests of Russia, Ukraine, or the United States. This scenario could lead to a complete breakdown in communication channels and a subsequent increase in military tensions.

The second scenario involves the pursuit of unilateral actions and the establishment of alternative routes through bilateral agreements. This could include options such as transporting Ukrainian agricultural products via the Danube River or overland routes to Europe.

The third scenario contemplates the resumption of the grain corridor in its previous configuration, once certain concerns raised by Russia have been addressed. This option is viewed as potentially beneficial for all parties involved and could prevent a global food crisis.

Notably, on August 10, Ukraine announced the establishment of temporary maritime corridors in the Black Sea for merchant ships traveling to or from the ports of Chernomorsk, Odessa, and Yuzhny.
