Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized the agreement between Israel and the UAE

14 August 2020

The agreement between the UAE and Israel to normalize relations ignores the will of the Palestinian people, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Earlier it was reported that Israel and the United Arab Emirates agreed to fully normalize relations. In a joint trilateral statement with the United States, it said that under the terms of the deal with the United Arab Emirates, Israel would temporarily postpone the decision to extend its sovereignty to territories in the West Bank. Also in the coming weeks, Israel and the UAE will sign a number of agreements in the field of investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications and others.

The Palestinian leadership has declared its strong rejection and condemnation of the tripartite agreement.

"We support the strong reaction shown by the Palestinian people and the administration to the joint statement of the United States, Israel and the UAE. It is extremely disturbing that the UAE is trying to disavow the plan developed by the Arab League under the leadership of Saudi Arabia in 2002 and supported by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for the purpose of unilateral benefit," the statement said.

It is noted that there was no reason to present a trilateral statement in support of the Palestinian cause.

"The UAE, which is trying to make secret calculations based on a stillborn and invalid US plan, ignores the will of Palestine. The UAE leadership does not have the right to negotiate with Israel on behalf of Palestine and make concessions on issues that are vital to it, without the consent of the Palestinian people and its administration. The peoples of the region will not forgive the hypocritical behavior of the UAE, which betrayed the Palestinians, " the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.

The agreement with the UAE will be Israel's third after similar agreements with Egypt and Jordan, concluded in 1979 and 1994. Israel also entered into agreements with Mauritania, which are now defunct, and interim agreements with the Palestinians. The UAE authorities called the agreement with Israel a "historic diplomatic achievement", assuring that the normalization of relations with the Jewish state will allow them to ensure the security of the region.
