Turkish Interior Minister accuses US of interfering in presidential election

10 May 2023

The US is trying to interfere in Turkey's upcoming presidential election, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on Wednesday night.

"US plans [to interfere in the elections] are intensifying. For this reason, Western press is interfering [in the elections] to implement the US plan. The West infiltrated our system after 1960, but [Turkish President Recep] Tayyip Erdogan eliminated all these Western infiltrations. <...> A century of stability [in the republic] will begin with our victory in the 2023 elections," Milliyet quoted the interior minister as saying.

According to the CEC, 64 million Turkish citizens will be able to participate in presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14, more than 1.6 million have already voted abroad. A total of 191,884 ballot boxes will be set up in the country and abroad. There are four candidates in the presidential elections, the main contenders are considered to be Erdogan and Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the opposition. A candidate needs more than 50% of the vote to win. Local political analysts do not rule out holding presidential elections in Turkey in two rounds. In this case, the second round would be held on May 28 and the winner would be the candidate with a simple majority.
