Turkish MFA plans to sign a new ground transportation agreement with Russia

15 December 2022

Turkey and Russia intend to update the ground transportation agreement signed 34 years ago. The new document will increase the importance of ground transportations to Russia through Georgia, and introducing electronic and quota-free customs transit will increase bilateral trade, Eni Safak daily reported on Thursday.

There are plans to adapt the agreement, signed during the Soviet Union, to the current situation, the newspaper cited Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Faruk Kaymakci. Speaking in the parliament, the diplomat said that in light of the Ukrainian crisis, there were serious problems with transportation to Russia by land, mainly through Ukraine. Thanks to the signing of this agreement, which will be renewed annually on January 31, these issues will be solved, the newspaper quoted Kaymakci as saying.

It stipulates, in particular, that no transit documents will be required for vehicles carrying less than six tons of goods. The new agreement will pave the way for using electronic transit documents in ground transportations, the diplomat noted.
