Turkish Minister calls US Treasury letter on consequences of ties with Russia pointless

Turkish Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati said Friday that Turkish business circles should not take into account a US Treasury Department letter warning of the consequences of cooperating with Russia in light of the sanctions imposed on Russia.

"It makes no sense that a letter sent to Turkey's business associations has caused concern in our business circles. Turkey is one of the world's most important political and economic centers. Our business communities should always feel the strength of their state by their side," the minister wrote on Twitter.

He noted that Turkey will continue trade and economic cooperation with its neighbors in various fields, including tourism.

Earlier, the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD) - the largest business association in Turkey - received a letter from the US Treasury Department warning of the consequences of cooperation with Russia. The document, signed by US Treasury Undersecretary Adewale Adeyemo, said that companies operating in Turkey could face the risk of being sanctioned if they do business with restricted Russian individuals or legal entities. TUSIAD said it sent the letter to the foreign ministry, the treasury and finance ministry, as well as the commerce ministry.
