Turkish President arrives in Moscow

05 March 2020

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has arrived in Moscow to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The main topic of the talks will be the escalation in Idlib.

The Turkish delegation includes the heads of the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry, the Minister of Treasury and Finance, and the head of the National Intelligence Organization.

Before that, three rounds of Russian-Turkish expert-level talks were held in Moscow and Ankara, but it was not possible to reach agreements on their results and the issue was brought to the level of the presidents.

The situation in Idlib escalated after the terrorists launched a large-scale offensive on the positions of the Syrian government troops on February 27. The SAR army returned fire, and as a result, the Turkish military were injured, who, as stated in the Russian Defense Ministry, "should not have been there".

A total of 36 Turkish soldiers were killed. The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that immediately after receiving information about the victims of the Turkish military, measures  for a complete ceasefire by Syrian troops were taken, and the safe evacuation of killed and wounded Turkish soldiers to the territory of Turkey was provided.
