Turkish President congratulated Saudi King on Eid al-Fitr despite strained relations between two countries

06 June 2019

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally called the King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to congratulate the monarch on the coming holiday Eid al-Fitr after the end of Ramadan, despite the difficult relations between two Muslim countries.

Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who is also the keeper of the main Islamic shrines in Medina and Mecca, in response thanked the Turkish President "for congratulating on this blessed occasion", asking "Allah to give Muslims and Arabs good and blessing," RIA Novosti reports.

Relations between Saudi Arabia and Turkey have remained strained in recent years, in particular, because of Turkish support of Qatar. Oficial Riyadh broke diplomatic relations with this country 2 years ago.

After neighboring Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, declared a boycott of Qatar and established its transport blockade, Turkey provided Doha with emergency food aid, urgently sent its own troops to Qatar and strengthened the military base in case of a military invasion from neighboring countries.
