Turkmenistan registers Russian Sputnik Light vaccine

23 December 2021

The Ministry of Health of Turkmenistan has registered the Sputnik Light vaccine. The country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted Thursday on its official website.

"On December 23, 2021, the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan registered the Sputnik Light vaccine and issued a corresponding certificate," the ministry said in a statement.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said Wednesday that no cases of coronavirus infection have been detected in the country and ordered to "intensify preventive measures."

Turkmenistan remains the only country in the former Soviet Union where no cases of the coronavirus have been officially recorded. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has imposed severe restrictions on entry and international flights, as well as a mask regime. In early July the country launched a campaign of mandatory vaccination against COVID-19 for all residents over 18 years of age. Russian vaccines Sputnik V and EpiVacCorona, as well as the Chinese drug CoronaVac, are used for this purpose.
