Turkmenistan Reiterates Support for "One China" Principle

15 January

Turkmenistan, maintaining its internationally recognized status of permanent neutrality, has declared its support for the "one China" principle, affirming that the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legitimate representation of the entire nation. The statement was issued by Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry.

"Turkmenistan, in strict compliance with the norms of international law and based on the charter of the United Nations, declares its firm support for the 'one China' principle. The government of the People's Republic of China is acknowledged as the only legitimate government representing the whole of China," stated the ministry.

This comes amid recent elections in Taiwan for the island's chief executive and legislative deputies. Lai Tsingde, representing Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party, secured victory with 40.05 percent of the popular vote.

Despite operating with its own administration since 1949, Beijing considers Taiwan to be one of its provinces.
