Turkmenistan's Central Election Commission registered three more candidates for the presidential election

On Monday, the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan registered three more candidates for the upcoming March 12 early presidential election. This was reported by the State News Agency of Turkmenistan (TDH).


According to the agency, the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums held a regular meeting in Ashgabat. The CEC registered the following presidential candidates: Maksatmyrat Ovezgeldiyev, the head of the sanitary and epidemiological service of the Babadaihan etrap (district) of the Akhal velayat (region), Kakageldi Sariyev, director of the scientific and production center "Renewable energy sources" of the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan and Babamyrat Meredov, director of the economic society Wepaly gurlusyk. It is noted that the candidates received appropriate certificates.


Also, two more candidates were nominated on Monday. An initiative group from Ashgabat nominated Khydyr Nunnaev, vice-rector for scientific work at the Turkmen State Institute of Physical Culture and Sports, for the highest state post. In addition, during a meeting of the initiative group in Dashoguz velayat, Maksat Odeshev, chairman of the Committee of the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan of the Saparmurat Turkmenbashi etrap, was nominated as a presidential candidate.


On February 15, the CEC announced the start of registration of candidates; the first to register was the son of the incumbent president, Serdar Berdymukhamedov, who was nominated by the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan and holds the post of Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. On February 16, the CEC registered Agajan Bekmyradov, a candidate of the Agrarian Party, followed two days later by Berdymammet Gurbanov, a member of the lower chamber of parliament, and Perhat Begenjov, director of the financial and economic secondary vocational school in Lebap velayat.


On February 11, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov at a meeting of the upper house of parliament said it was time to give way to youth. He emphasized that he had reached the age of the Prophet Muhammad (63) two years ago and had now made "a difficult decision. The next day the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda announced that early presidential elections were scheduled for March 12. On February 14, the electoral campaign began in the country, including the nomination of candidates, their registration, and meetings with voters. After being nominated as a candidate of the ruling Democratic Party, Serdar Berdymukhamedov promised to continue his father's initiatives if he wins.
