The proposed legislative amendment in Kazakhstan will grant the "Tselinniy" and "Syrdarya" border checkpoints on the Kazakh-Uzbek border the status of international facilities, according to the draft document published by Kazakhstan's legal information portal.
The Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development of Kazakhstan explained that the amendments intend to change the operational hours of the checkpoints from daylight hours to round-the-clock and upgrade their status from bilateral (interstate) to international (multilateral). This move is part of the efforts to enhance the cooperation between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan along their shared border.
With these changes, the total number of international border checkpoints along the Kazakh-Uzbek border will increase to eight. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish the "Central Asia" Center for International Trade and Economic Cooperation in the Maktaaral district, where the "Tselinniy" and "Syrdarya" checkpoints are located. This initiative was initiated by former President Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2018 and has received continued support under the leadership of current President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who has encouraged the expedited construction of the center.
