Two Russian embassy staff killed in Kabul bombing

Two employees of the Russian diplomatic mission in Kabul were killed in a terrorist attack near the Russian embassy on Monday, the Russian MFA said in a statement.


"At 10:50 am Kabul time on September 5, n unidentified militant set off an explosive device in the immediate vicinity of the entrance to the consular section of the Russian embassy in Kabul. As a result of the attack, two employees of the diplomatic mission were killed, and there are also Afghan citizens among the wounded," the statement reads.


The foreign ministry added that the Russian embassy is in close contact with the special services of Afghanistan and is conducting an investigation into the incident.


The Arabic TV channel Al Arabiya reported earlier that a suicide bomber committed the explosion. Maulawi Sabir, head of the police district where the incident took place, said "security forces identified and neutralized the suicide bomber before he reached his target." Qatar's Al Jazeera television channel, citing an Afghan law enforcement source, reported that at least eight people were killed and  15 others were injured.
