The ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) called the statements of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, made in Bruges, racist. The agency said so in a statement published on its website on Monday.

According to the agency, the UAE foreign ministry expressed its disapproval of Borrell's remarks, called them racist and noted that such statements contribute to the deterioration of the atmosphere of intolerance and discrimination around the world. The agency did not specify what words of Borrell were meant. Moreover, the foreign ministry summoned the acting head of the EU mission in the UAE Emil Poulsen and demanded the European external action service to comment on "the harmful and racist statements of Borrell."

Speaking at the opening of the European diplomatic academy in Bruges, Belgium, on October 13, the European diplomatic chief, explaining the foreign policy idea of unification, compared Europe to a garden and the rest of the world to a jungle that might invade that garden if dialogue is not maintained with them.
