The UN Security Council is scheduled to convene an open meeting on the Middle East conflict on Thursday, November 9, as confirmed by Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, the Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN.
"The [UNSC] open meeting is scheduled for Thursday," she announced.
Nusseibeh also stated that China, holding the UNSC presidency in November, "plans to convene regular [Security Council] meetings, including both formal and informal sessions, to maintain attention on this humanitarian crisis."
The permanent representative mentioned that the UN Security Council is currently conducting consultations regarding the draft Middle East resolution, which has been prepared by the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council, and all 15 member states are actively engaged in these discussions.
"The deliberations regarding the draft resolution are currently underway, involving the full participation of all 15 members of the Security Council as we collaboratively refine the document's content," she stated.
Last month, the UN Security Council was unable to pass any of the four draft resolutions concerning the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Currently, the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council are in the process of drafting their own document, which is anticipated to include elements from previous draft resolutions.
The UN Security Council comprises 15 members: 5 permanent members (Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, the United States) and 10 non-permanent members. These non-permanent members are elected by the UN General Assembly and serve two-year terms, with 5 seats up for re-election each year. The current non-permanent members are Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Gabon, Ghana, Malta, Japan, Mozambique, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
On Monday, the UN Security Council conducted a closed-door meeting to address the Middle East conflict. The meeting was initiated by China and the UAE in response to attacks on the Palestinian refugee camp of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip and an ambulance convoy near Al-Shifa Central Hospital.
