14 March

The United Arab Emirates is planning to organize a major football tournament featuring national teams from BRICS countries, announced Salem Humaid Al-Mazaini, President of the BRICS International Football Alliance, during a video conference.

“We are keen to be active members of BRICS and see sports diplomacy as an excellent way to enhance cooperation within the organization,” Al-Mazaini stated. “We intend to take an active role in this initiative.”

According to him, with strong support from Larisa Zelentsova, President of the BRICS International Strategic Projects Alliance, preparations for the tournament are underway. “Eight BRICS nations have already confirmed participation, and we would be happy if more teams join,” he added.

BRICS was founded in 2006, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined in 2011, and as of January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia became full members.
