UAE to Deliver Letter from US President to Iran

12 March

The UAE Presidential Adviser on Diplomatic Affairs, Anwar Gargash, is set to deliver a letter from US President Donald Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.

"The UAE presidential adviser on diplomatic affairs will meet with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi this afternoon. He is bringing a letter from Trump," ISNA quoted the diplomat as saying.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to use military force against Iran if Tehran refuses to negotiate a deal with Washington regarding its nuclear program. The US president signed an executive order reinstating the "maximum pressure" policy, vowing to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Khamenei, in turn, has stated that Iran will not negotiate under pressure.

On March 7, Trump announced that he had sent a message to Khamenei proposing talks on the nuclear issue. However, the Iranian leader rejected the idea, arguing that the US only acts in its own interests, making negotiations with Washington unacceptable for Tehran.
