The return of Donald Trump to the White House doesn’t entirely rule out the possibility of reaching some sort of agreement with Iran, including on the nuclear deal. That’s according to Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna.
“It’s clear that a Republican administration would take a much tougher stance than a Democratic one — that’s obvious. But that doesn’t mean some kind of deal is off the table, at least in theory,” Ulyanov said during an interview with Rossiya-24.
He also noted that discussions in Europe about a potential new framework for negotiations with Iran are still very vague and lack any concrete details. According to Ulyanov, any new agreement would inevitably have to include the lifting of unilateral US sanctions on Iran.
“That could only happen if the Americans actually sit down at the negotiating table and actively help shape the new agreement. Right now, no one even knows what that might look like. There’s also been some talk in the West about expanding the agenda to cover not just Iran’s nuclear program, but also regional security issues and Tehran’s missile capabilities. Basically, they want to solve three problems at once. That kind of approach usually doesn’t work — but it’s too early to say,” he explained.
Ulyanov emphasized that Russia has consistently expressed its willingness to help find a diplomatic solution. “Russia is in a unique position to help broker compromises — probably more so than anyone else,” he concluded.
