Ulyanov: it's time to make decisions in talks on Iran nuclear deal

17 February 2022

Vienna talks on restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program have reached the stage where the parties need to make final decisions, Mikhail Ulyanov, head of the Russian delegation to the talks and Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, said on Wednesday.

"I agree. It's time to make final decisions at the Vienna talks on the JCPOA," Ulyanov wrote on Twitter. This is how he commented on Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the Iranian delegation Ali Bagheri's statement on Twitter that the parties at the Vienna talks are closer than ever to concluding an agreement on the nuclear deal. Earlier, Ulyanov reported that the talks had entered the final straight.

The eighth round of talks is underway in Vienna to restore the JCPOA to its original form and bring the US back into the multilateral agreement. The work is taking place in the format of the participants of the Joint Commission of Iran and the Five (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France), their separate consultations with the US without the Islamic republic, as well as three working groups. The negotiators are working on a draft final agreement. It is believed that the eighth round could be the last; the negotiators were set to finish the work in February 2022.
