UN calls for lifting of all sanctions due to the pandemic

25 March 2020

Against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on G20 leaders to lift all sanctions that prevent the delivery of food, medical care and basic necessities.

"This is a time of solidarity, not isolation. <...> COVID-19 will require a response the likes of which have not been seen before — a "wartime" plan in times of humanitarian crisis. The G20 leadership has an exceptional opportunity to come up with a powerful response package to address various threats from coronavirus. This would demonstrate solidarity with the peoples of the world, especially with the most vulnerable ones," the message of the UN Secretary-General reads, in particular.

On March 26, an urgent G20 summit will be held on the situation with the coronavirus. Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in its work.

According to the latest data, more than 370 thousand people are infected with the coronavirus in the world, and more than 16 thousand died.
